​I have spent more than fifty years working in military and occupational diving. I began as a Canadian Forces combat diver and later worked as a commercial diver, including offshore mixed-gas diving in the North Sea. I went on to serve as a Royal Canadian Navy clearance diver, supervisor and diving safety officer.

My work has also included diving research, hyperbaric operations, incident investigation and involvement in the development of diving safety requirements. Those roles gave me the chance to see diving from several sides: as the person underwater, the person supervising the dive and the person responsible for asking whether the work had been properly planned.

Over the years, I have seen how easily a high-risk condition can become accepted simply because people have worked that way before. An incident may appear to begin underwater, but the decisions that shaped it were often made well before the diver entered the water.

That concern led me to establish ODRM. I want to help project owners, safety professionals and diving teams better understand the work, identify hazards early and make informed decisions about how a diving project will be carried out.

My aim is to share what I have learned and encourage practical improvements in occupational diving safety. There is always more we can learn from one another and from the incidents we have experienced.
